Heishi is a piece of shell that has been ground into bead and then strung into a necklace. It has come to be refered to as "hand made tiny beads" made from natural materials. The origin is linked to the ancient history of Santo Domingo and San Felipe Pueblo Indians. It has also been referred to as the oldest form of jewelry in New Mexico. The Pueblo Indians used shells to make beads to trade.
