P367 - Hopi Etched Black Pots -Artist: Dalawepi (Ergil F. Vallo) - Description: Ergil F. Vallo, a Hopi artist known as Dalawepi, has been potting since 1981. Dalawepi means "colors of the rainbow" and he took this name because the colors of the rainbow have been applied to the etched background of the pottery he creates. Dalawepi is a unique artist and there are none like him among the Native American potters. His pottery is heavy, solid and graceful. He inscribes his pottery with ancient symbols, animals, and Hopi Kachinas, each image perfectly balanced in the pottery. His use of brilliant colors gives his work a beautiful appeal and are ground gemstones (turquoise, azurite, and others) that are applied after the work is fired. These pots should never be rubbed or washed as this will remove these colors. This is a beautiful set of black pots that were hand coiled by Dalawepi and include some of his favorite designs including the Kachina.
